If you're looking for work, or thinking of training for a career change, there is a host of organisations waiting to help you...

Worktrain, operated by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP), and the Emplyoment Service, provides information on job vacancies and training courses across the country. Whether you're staying close to home, or are preparing to spread your wings, there's bound to be something for you on the Worktrain website. Search by occupation or location, or by training course qualification level. Job application tips and interview advice are also available, along with details of benefit entitlement, support for those with a disability, and ways of finding local careers advice and childcare.

The Learndirect Logo

Finding a flexible training course that you can complete at your own pace is easy with Learndirect. Hundreds of courses cover topics such as IT, business and management, languages, literacy and numeracy, and work-based learning.

There are around 2,000 Learndirect centres in the UK, including those at Newton Aycliffe, Shildon and Spennymoor. You can try out courses using the website's 'taster' facility, and upon registering on a course, are allocated a personal tutor.

Job Centre Plus

Job Centre Plus provides jobhunters with online help and support, with thousands of jobs listed online.

The website also includes details of work-based qualifications, Modern Apprenticeships, and career development loans. Specialist support is given to those with a disability and lone parents.

If you're aged 19 or under, why not give Connexions a call? Confidential advice, available on a freephone number between 8am and 2am, covers everything from careers and learning to healthy living, relationships, and preparing to move away from home. You can also find more info on societies and organisations that you can join, such as St. John Ambulance, and there are tips on travelling safely at home and abroad.
