The Council has been provided with in-house legal support since its inception in 1974. The aim of Legal Services are :-
Sedgefield’s Legal Services are Law Society Lexcel accredited.
The Legal Services Section of Sedgefield Borough Council provides advice to the Authority through its Elected Members, Committees, Working Groups and Panels. Legal Advice and support to any Department or Officer of the Authority and to any other person in relation to the discharge of the Authority's functions.
The Legal Services Section engages in a wide spectrum of legal work including representation before Courts, Tribunals and Inquiries including all preparatory and consequential work.
Legal work is also provided in connection with contracts, conveyancing, Landlord and Tenant issues and other property related matters.
Legal work also comprises the preparation of and all subsequent work in relation to Statutory Orders, Notices and Bye-laws and, where applicable, promotion of local Acts of Parliament. Additionally, the Legal Services Section provides advice arising from the authority's insurance arrangements including the handling by and claims against the Authority.
