Tudoe Grange Athletics - July 2006
The SPORTSKA$H fund granted Tudhoe Grange School girl’s athletics team £100 to get them to Bournemouth. Here they competed in the English School Cup Final.
800 schools competed throughout all stages and Tudhoe Grange finished 11th at the end of the final.
Rachel Lee competed in the high jump and 200m sprint, coming joint 3rd and 11th consecutively. Rachel said: “Thank you for the £100 SPORTSKA$H grant which allowed us to go to Bournemouth and compete in the final.”
Durham District Roller Skating Club is a small but very active club based at Shildon-Sunnydale Leisure Centre. Recently a SPORTSKA$H grant was awarded which enabled four of the girls to represent Great Britain in Croatia.
The girls met up with the rest of the Great Britain team form Kent and competed for the Amfora Cup.
During the warm up sessions it became apparent that the European skaters were at a very high standard, however, the girls were non-perturbed and skated as well as they could. They all felt the trip was to be treated as a learning curve and returned to England with new aims in mind.
The cost of going to competitions, particularly those abroad, is very high and unfortunately this is often a barrier for the girls entering them. Diane Wade from the club said: “ We were all very grateful for the SPORTSKA$H grant which paid the biggest of the air fare for the girls.” The club has skaters from beginners up to last years ‘Ladies Senior Champion,’ Katy Lodge. Generally the coaches volunteer their time otherwise the club would be unable to run.
