A well designed and managed CCTV system can make a significant contribution to the reduction of crime, community reassurance, vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
The Borough Council with it's partners in particular the Town and Parish Councils, has developed a network of 81 CCTV cameras in key locations across the Borough over the last 10 years. We will shortly be adding a further 3 cameras to our network.
We also provide a monitoring service for a number of other organisation's including the new National Railway Museum at Shildon.
We are working with the Police to introduce Automatic Number Plate Recognition through our camera network to support them in the reduction of vehicle related crime.
The recent addition of a mobile CCTV unit allows coverage of areas not otherwise covered by static cameras. The mobile CCTV vehicle is also involved in education and promoting good citizenship throughout the community.
The CCTV service operates as a Partnership with each member taking a role in delivering the objectives of the service.
Sedgefield Borough Council manages the service and provides the monitoring of the cameras. We work with the Police to produce evidence for court proceedings where CCTV evidence can play a key role in obtaining a conviction.
Durham Constabulary work jointly with us to ensure the CCTV network contributes to tackling crime and disorder, including anti social behaviour across Sedgefield Borough.
The Town and Parish Councils provide funding for the service and are a key partner in the development of the service.
We work with a number of commercial organisations to provide a monitoring service in the Borough and this is an area of the service we hope to develop further in the coming years.
We work with a number of voluntary organisations in particular the residents associations across the Borough to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.
We are currently reviewing our CCTV service and will be producing a Strategy to develop the service further over the next 3- 5 years.
