We offer ducklings level 1-5 at this stage of the child's development.
Current water confidence 4-5 years old – Remaining the same

This is a reception class for those children aged between 4-5 years and are new to swimming. The emphasis at this level is water confidence and fun.

New 5 years olds join us at stage 1

For each award to be issued, the participant will be required to perform all designated skills, competently and with high reliability to achieve the relevant stage award.

At all stages of achievement stroke techniques will be of a high standard, as we follow the ASA guidelines.

Stage 1

  1. Enter the water safely.
  2. Move freely around the pool in all directions.
  3. Scoop the water & wash your face.
  4. To partake in a teacher led game.
  5. Push & glide to the wall. (buoyancy aids may be used)
  6. Push & glide from the wall. (NO buoyancy aids)
  7. Achieve a horizontal floating position on both front & back.
  8. Child to demonstrate an understanding of pool rules.
  9. Fully Submerge head.
  10. Exit pool safety.

Stage 2

  1. Kick 5 metres with /without floats on front.
  2. Kick 5 metres with /without floats on back.
  3. Push from wall & glide on front with / without floats.
  4. Push from wall & glide on Back with / without floats.
  5. Using arms & legs swim 5 metres on front.
  6. Using arms & legs swim 5 metres on back.
  7. Perform a rotation from front to back to gain an upright position.
  8. Perform a rotation from back to front to gain an upright position.
  9. Jump from poolside into water
  10. Blow bubbles a minimum 3 times rhythmically turning head to side to breath.

Stage 3

  1. Jump into water minimum depth 0.9meters.
  2. Kick 5 metres breaststroke showing good technique with float.
  3. Sink, push & glide maintain a streamline position.
  4. Using arms & legs swim 10 metres on back.
  5. Using arms & legs swim 10 metres on Front.
  6. Fully submerge for 5 seconds.
  7. Fully submerge to pick up an object with both hands. (Minimum depth 0.9m)
  8. Answer 3 questions on the water safety code.
  9. Push & glide arms extended on front & back with logroll.
  10. Travel on front, tuck to rotate around the horizontal axis to return on the back.

Stage 4

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of why we sink and float
  2. Perform a tuck float for 10 seconds
  3. Perform a mushroom; star and pencil float at the top of the water without pausing. Hold each position for a minimum 3 seconds.
  4. Push & glide to the pool floor. (Minimum depth 0.9)
  5. Kick 10 metres backstroke floats may be used.
  6. Kick 10 metres front crawl floats may be used.
  7. Kick 10 metres butterfly floats may be used.
  8. Kick 10 metres breaststroke floats may be used.
  9. Scull 5 metres maintaining a horizontal position.
  10. Travel on the front & back, rolling in one continues movement.
  11. Swim 15 metres any stroke (ASA expected stroke standard)
